A trained professional chef with a background in biology and animal care, Rod has designed and built community gardens through Long Beach Organic and is the chair and director of the District 9 Urban Agriculture Council. He is a Certified Master Gardener (University of California extensions) and Certified Laboratory Animal Technologist (American Association of Laboratory Animal Sciences AALAS)
Rod is a retired Staff Research Associate/Animal Resource Manager for USC, UCLA and the Veterans Administration.

At Organic Harvest, which was converted from a community farm last year, Rod along with Adam, manage plots that are leased by local restaurants (like Thai District, Under the Sun and James Republic) and work directly with the chefs to determine the best use of the space for their needs. Rod is Co-owner of Organic Harvest Gardens
